Pretoria’s early childhood development centres are ready to reopen when the school year begins next week Monday.

This was according to community and social development MMC Thabisile Vilakazi, who visited various centres in the metro, on Wednesday.

“I was specifically looking at compliance in terms of maintenance of facilities, Covid-19 protocols and security,” she said of her visit.

When it comes to maintenance, Vilakazi said the metro had been fixing lights, doors, kitchen equipment and roof leaks to ensure these sites were safe.

She said these immediate interventions formed part of a larger infrastructure refurbishment plan that was divided into three phases.

“The first phase is focused on getting pre-schools ready to open, the second phase looks at further upgrading the centres while they are open, and the third phase is directed towards long-term infrastructure refurbishment and upgrades,” she said.
