DA leader John Steenhuisen says the municipal election will go down as a milestone for SA with ANC falling below 50% for 1st time.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says the result announced for the 2021 local government elections on Thursday night will be remembered as a historic milestone in South Africa’s democracy.

“For the very first time the ANC has fallen below 50%. It very clearly says that the political landscape has shifted and that it is possible to bring the ANC below 50% across the length and breadth of South Africa.”

Steenhuisen describes the result for the DA as “respectable”, achieving what the party has been working towards for many years.

“We are buoyed by the result – we believe it’s a consolidation and that the DA has turned a corner in terms of where we were at and where we need to be. It gives us a solid foundation to start to build towards the 2024 election with the ultimate game to bring the ANC below 50% across the length and breadth of South Africa.

We’ve also heard the message that’s been sent to us by communities… One of those messages is that people don’t like unstable coalitions…. that don’t deliver. That’s the message that’s been sent in place like Tshwane, Nelson Mandela Bay and in the City of Johannesburg.
