Release: Immediate

Note to Editors: Please find attached pictures of dumped medical waste here and here.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been reliably informed about another batch of medical waste dumped within walking distance from the Steve Biko and Tshwane Provincial Hospitals in Capital Park yesterday.

The area is also in close vicinity of two schools, an old age home, and with the risk of COVID-19 spreading, the irresponsible dumping of this waste is even more concerning.

This follows close on the heels of an earlier incident this month when thousands of items of unused personal protective equipment were dumped in the Hennops River.

It is unacceptable that medical waste is being recklessly dumped like this, posing a contamination risk to others who are either handling the waste or waste pickers that live off our landfills and dumps.

We call on Acting Gauteng Health MEC Jacob Mamabolo to urgently get to the bottom of this and provide the public with the answers.
