PRETORIA – The City of Tshwane has assured the Mamelodi public that the municipality’s housing allocation process will be transparent and no one will be permitted to jump the queue.

City official Mandla Nkomo made the comments at a ceremony in Mamelodi East yesterday where 72 houses were handed over.

The area was the scene of illegal occupations two weeks ago which led to violent clashes with the police. The rightful homeowners have now been handed the keys to the houses.

There were jubilant scenes as the new homeowners accepted the keys to their houses.

One of the recipients says she waited nearly two decades for a solid roof over their heads.

“I don’t know what to say, my children are so happy. I’m so happy as I was living in a shack. I’ve been on the waiting list for 18 years.”

Nkomo says he wants to ensure houses are allocated quickly and fairly.

“We want to try to ensure that our beneficiary list becomes transparent, and try to make sure that the people who couldn’t get the houses before, they get their houses and make sure no one jumps the queue.”

Another 250 houses are to be built as part of this particular project.
